Canada held its most recent all-program Express Entry draw on September 28, 2022. This was the seventh all-program draw since they resumed on July 6. IRCC issued invitations to 3,750 candidates with minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 504. As this was an all-program draw, invitations were issued to eligible candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), all programs that operate under the Express Entry system.

The minimum cut off Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score was 511. Express Entry is one of the most prominent pathways for immigrating to Canada. Until the last draw on August 31, the number of candidates receiving ITAs grew by 250 with each draw.

A parliamentary motion called for Immigration Minister Sean Fraser to publish a plan to expand pathways to permanent residence for temporary residents. On May 11, Fraser was given 120 days to respond, a deadline which falls outside of the House of Commons’ sitting calendar. “If the government chooses to develop a plan as suggested in motion M-44, and if these changes to expand immigration pathways for temporary residents in Canada were to take form into a bill, it is within the House’s rules and practice to wait for the bill’s introduction and first reading before its content is being made public,” wrote Heather Bradley from the Office of the Speaker.

Statistics Canada has released its Labour Force Survey (LFS) for the month of August 2022. For the first time since data became available in 2015, there were fewer unemployed people (989,000) than job vacancies (1,038,000) in Canada. This is a huge revelation for job seekers, with over a third (38%) of businesses expecting that recruitment of skilled employees would be a challenge in the next three months. Per the LFS, employment declined by 40,000 jobs, while the unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 5.4% nationally; the first time the unemployment rate has risen in seven months

The world can change a lot in 20 years, and that reality is no different when we look at Canada in particular. On September 8, Statistics Canada released its projection for Canada’s demographic makeup in the year 2041. These projections, which are rooted in data from 2016’s Census of Population, provide some key insights into where present figures and statistics project the country to be from a demographic standpoint in roughly 19 years.

PNP allows Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals who want to immigrate to Canada and are interested in settling in a specific province. There are over 80 provincial immigration streams that are designed to attract workers, graduates and entrepreneurs. Each program is designed to respond to the provinces labour force needs. All provinces are included in the program except for Nunavut and Quebec. Quebec has their own authority to determine the selection criteria for economic immigration.

Canada has tied for eighth place alongside Australia, Greece, Malta and the Czech Republic according to the most recent Global Passport Ranking report by Henley & Partners, a global immigration consultancy. The firm ranks passports on the number of other countries a citizen may enter without having to obtain any kind of visa. The report states Canadian passport holders can enter 185 countries without a visa. The firm ranked Japan passports as the number one passport in the world, able to enter 193 countries. Singapore and South Korea tied for second place at 192. The lowest ranking passport on the report was Afghanistan, which allows visa free entry to only 27 countries.

Work hours obtained as a full-time student are also not criteria for eligibility (even if these are co-op hours). Additionally, work hours are not counted above 30 a week, meaning that work experience must be accrued over 52 weeks. Furthermore, you cannot plan to live in Quebec. The province has its own immigration system and selects its skilled workers under programs such as the Quebec Regular Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) and the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ).

Canada’s immigration department, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) classifies immigration into three categories: economic class, family class, and refugees. By far the most popular route is economic class immigration. These immigrants are eligible for permanent residency based on their work experience, education, and other economic factors. Family class immigration makes up the second largest amount. Canadians can sponsor their spouses, common-law partners, children, parents, grandparents and others under this category. Finally, refugees who are able to come to Canada if they are referred by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a designated referral organization, or a private group.

Through family class sponsorship, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor a dependent child living abroad to come join them in Canada and become a permanent resident. The purpose of sponsoring a dependent child is to enable family members who reside in different countries to be reunited in Canada.
