The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit their family for up to five consecutive years without renewing their visitor status. Furthermore, parents and grandparents can enter Canada multiple times with the Super Visa for up to 10 years.

Under Canadian immigration law, all temporary residents have an automatically imposed condition that they are required to leave Canada after their work permit expires. There is, however, section 181 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) which states that temporary residents can apply to extend their authorized period of stay as long as they do so before it ends. Those who take advantage of section 181 can stay in Canada until Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) decides on their application. Statistics Canada has released its projections for Canada’s population growth spanning the next 47 years. The report states that by 2068, in a medium growth scenario, Canada’s population could reach up to 57 million people, largely driven by increased immigration. During this period between 2016 and 2021, Canada experienced a boom in population growth and the population increased at a rate twice the speed of all other G7 countries. While this slowed through 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada saw a rebound in population growth in the first quarter of 2022 as it welcomed the highest number of new immigrants in a first quarter since 1990.

Under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), citizens of the United States and Mexico can obtain a Canadian work permit. As Canada continues to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, immigration is expected to become more important than ever. The federal government’s most recent immigration levels plan targets the arrival of more than one million new permanent residents between 2022 and 2024, with a yearly intake of well over 430,000 newcomers.

Canada offers over 100 immigration pathways and is always looking for talent from around the world

Canadian companies, academic institutions, and government-funded organizations that access immigration are being negatively impacted by delays at Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The Canadian Employee Relocation Council (CERC), a not-for-profit that is particularly interested in workforce mobility matters, conducted a survey during the month of June 2022. A total of 33 organizations that regularly access the International Mobility Program (IMP) responded to the survey. It is the second edition of a comparable survey from January 2021. Between June and July, the overall backlog of applicants at IRCC grew from 2.4 million to 2.7 million, a 12% increase. Over that same time the backlog for temporary foreign workers grew by 21% from 408,733 to 493,746 applicants. The backlog is driving up processing times well in excess of IRCC’s service standards.

Canada’s unemployment rate held steady at 4.9% in July, matching the record low from the month before. The total number of unemployed people held steady at one million in July. In addition, 426,000 people wanted a job but did not look for one, and therefore did not meet the definition of unemployed. This was little changed for the sixth consecutive month. The adjusted unemployment rate—which accounts for this source of potential labour supply—remained at 6.8%, the lowest rate since comparable data first became available in 1997. In addition, employment in Canada decreased by 31,000 jobs, which according to Statistics Canada does not represent a significant change. Canada lost about 74,000 jobs from May to July, but from May 2021 to May 2022, employment had increased by more than one million.

In 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) began looking deeper into the departments’ internal environment through an anti-racism lens.
